A complete checklist for equipping a NUS classroom

  • A complete checklist for equipping a NUS classroom

A New Ukrainian School classroom is not rows of desks facing the board but a flexible space with several centres for different activities. Equipping such a classroom takes more than buying "desks and chairs": a well-thought-out set is needed. Below is a practical checklist based on the Ministry of Education recommendations.

The main principle: mobility and zoning

The Ministry recommends organising the classroom through eight learning centres. Furniture must be mobile and transformable. Single light desks that slide into blocks and chairs by size groups are the basis of a NUS classroom.

Checklist by centre

1. Learning and cognitive centre: single mobile desks/tables, chairs by size groups, a board.

2. Changeable thematic centres: boards, flip charts, easels, stands.

3. Play centre: board games, equipment for active games, storage.

4. Art and creativity centre: shelves for materials, a stand for displaying works.

5. Living nature corner: stands/shelves for plants.

6. Rest centre: a rug, soft poufs, benches.

7. Children class library: open shelves at the child level.

8. Teacher centre: a desk and chair, a computer/laptop, cabinets and shelves for teaching materials.

Storage and space organisation

Separately provide cabinets and shelving for materials and belongings, as well as a cloakroom/hangers. Sufficient storage is what is usually lacking when equipping from scratch.

Compliance with standards

Furniture for a NUS classroom must comply with national standards — in particular DSTU 22046 "Furniture for educational institutions" and standards for pupil tables and chairs, size groups and sanitary norms.
