DSTU EN 1729: how to select school furniture by height (size marks 0–7)

Desks and chairs that don't match a pupil's height risk posture and eyesight problems and draw remarks from sanitary inspections and tender reviews. Here is how the current standard DSTU EN 1729 sets sizes and colour coding for educational furniture.

What DSTU EN 1729 is

The national standard DSTU prEN 1729-1:2004, identical to the European prEN 1729-1:2004, has applied in Ukraine since 1 April 2006. Part 1 covers functional dimensions, Part 2 covers safety. After GOST 11015-93 and GOST 11016-93 were withdrawn on 1 January 2026, DSTU EN 1729 is the main reference for selecting school furniture, aligned with the sanitary regulation (Ministry of Health order №2205 of 25.09.2020).

Size marks 0–7 and colour coding

Eight size marks (0–7), each for a height range and its own colour. Desk and chair are chosen by the same mark and colour.

How to select by height

Measure the pupil's height without shoes, find the size mark (0–7) and colour, and take a desk and chair of the same mark. For classes with a changing roster, choose adjustable models covering several marks.

For procurement and tenders

In the technical specification, reference DSTU EN 1729-1 (dimensions) and DSTU EN 1729-2 (safety), state the required size marks, the height-matching requirement (regulation №2205), and procure under DK 021:2015 code 39160000-1 via Prozorro. Browse desks, chairs and desk sets.
