Computer science classroom: furniture and workstation ergonomics

  • Computer science classroom: furniture and workstation ergonomics

The computer science classroom is the only school room where students work with technology every day. Here are the current Ukrainian requirements for space, furniture and workstation layout, plus DK 021:2015 (CPV) codes for public procurement via Prozorro.

Current regulations

Two key documents apply: the Sanitary Regulation for general secondary education institutions (Ministry of Health order No. 2205 of 25.09.2020) and the Safety Rules for computer science classrooms (order No. 81 of 16.03.2004). Core requirements: at least 6 m² per computer workstation (4.5 m² minimum where a dedicated room is unavailable; the Sanitary Regulation allows 4.5 m² with LCD monitors), monitors 15″ or larger (CRT monitors are prohibited), separate keyboard and mouse, screen illumination of at least 200 lx and desk illumination of at least 400 lx.

Workstation furniture

  • Computer desks: depth from 600 mm (eyes 50–70 cm from the screen), CPU shelf, cable management, rounded corners, 2 mm PVC edging.
  • Height-adjustable student chairs covering DSTU EN 1729 size marks (typically 4–7 for secondary school).
  • Desktop PCs are traditionally arranged along the walls, monitors facing the wall: daylight falls from the side, cables run along the walls, and the teacher sees every screen. The centre of the room holds desks for the theory part of the lesson.
  • Storage cabinets for materials and peripherals; for laptops — a lockable cabinet or charging trolley.

Procurement via Prozorro

Furniture is procured under DK 021:2015 codes 39160000-1 "School furniture" or 39134000-0 "Computer furniture"; computer equipment goes separately under group 30230000-0. Specify sizes or height marks, materials, edging, cable management and warranty in the tender specification.
